About Utpanna Ekadashi 2025

Introduction to Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat (उत्पन्ना एकादशी व्रत)

On the holy day of Ekadashi fast, you can eat milk, curd, fruits, sherbet, sago, almonds, coconut, sweet potatoes, potatoes, black pepper, rock salt, Rajgir flour etc.

Devotees who keep Ekadashi fast basically eat something only after worshiping Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. Some people keep fast without water and food. They break the fast in Parana Time in the next day morning.

Utpanna Brahmanda Vrat Katha (उत्पन्ना ब्रह्माण्ड व्रत कथा)

The King Yudhishthira told Lord Krishna,

Hey! Basudev, by your grace I have come to know about almost all the Ekadashis. Now I am very excited to know about Utpanna Ekadashi. Please tell us about this Ekadashi in detail.

Lord Krishna said, Oh Yudhishthira! I have told you the details of every Ekadashis, now listen the significance of this Utpanna Ekadashi fast.

The Story of Utpanna Ekadashi

There was a city named Indravati, in that city there was a king who was very powerful. He had created terror even among the gods. He had a son named “Murre” who was very brave and powerful, it was not so easy to defeat him in the war. He was very strong and scary. That terrible demon defeated all the gods like Indra, Aditya etc. in the war and drove them out of their kingdoms. Then all the gods including Indra got frightened and they told the whole story to Lord Shiva.

Hearing such words, all the gods reached Lord Shri Hari, folded their hands in front of him and bowed to him and said, Hey! Madhusudan!, Oh! Palanhari, please protect us from this terrible demon. Frightened by this demon, we all have come to your refuge. You are the protector of everyone.

Oh! Lord, you are omnipresent! please protect us.

Hearing Indra's words like this, Lord Vishnu said, "You people don't worry, I will kill his demon soon."

God also heard his fierce roar. Hearing that, God challenged him for a fight. He pierced all his armies with his snake-like arrows. Many demons were killed. Only Murre was left. He still kept fighting with God, because he was a very powerful demon.

Whatever arrow God shot, it became a flower for him. It is said that this war continued for 10 thousand years. It is believed that then Lord Vishnu got tired and went to Badri's ashram, that ashram was covered with Badri trees (Ber trees). It was such a calm, serene and inaccessible place, where no one went. Today that place is famous as Badri Nath Dham. It is one of the four Dhams located in Uttarakhand.

There was a beautiful cave named Hemvati in Badrinath. That cave was 12 yojans long and it had only one door for entry and exit. Lord Vishnu fell asleep there in the lap of Yoganidra. But Murre also followed him and knowing that the Lord was asleep, he got ready to attack him, then a Goddess with a radiant form appeared from the Lord's body. The Goddess assumed a form similar to Goddess Durga and named Rakshasi. That demon Murre challenged him for a fight. A fierce battle took place. The Goddess killed him instantly. When Sri Hari woke up from Yoganidra, he was very happy to know everything. Lord Vishnu told the Goddess that, you were born on the day of Ekadashi and you have to be born again on the day of Ekadashi, only then this Ekadashi will be known in the whole world as Utpanna Ekadashi. Whoever worships you, it will be considered as my worship as well. Those who are your devotees, they will be my devotees as well.

Benefits of Utpanna Ekadashi

It is believed that by worshipping Lord Vishnu and fasting on the day of Utpanna Ekadashi, all the sins of a person are destroyed and the person attains salvation.

The charity and good deeds done on this day give the devotee many times more auspicious results. Keep in mind that no matter which Ekadashi it is, it is necessary to worship Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Vishnu on every Ekadashi. By doing this, the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Shri Hari Narayan always remain on the fasting person.
