Budhei Osa is a regional festival celebrated in the coastal region of Odisha. Budhei Osa, also known by some as Buddhi Baman Osa, is celebrated with great reverence and devotion during the auspicious month of Bhadrava Month comes in between August and September. The women of the houses observe fast for the whole day and in the evening, they perform Budhai Osa Puja. This fast is observed on every Wednesday of the month of Bhadrava. It is said that by worshipping Goddess Budhai, children get the right intellect, long lived and disease free. Married women of the village come together and perform this Puja at one place. Some fast for their children, while some, who do not have any children, thy do fast to get a child.

Goddess Budhai(ବୁଧେଇ) is said to have the form of the mother of Goddess Vimala and is worshipped in that form. Buddhi Baman is worshipped in the Bimala temple located inside the Puri Jagannath temple.

Budhei Osa Puja Vidhi(ବୁଧେଇ ଓଷା)

On Wednesday morning, the women who are in fasting, they clean the place where they worship with the cow dung.

After bathing again, they setup mata’s Chowki. Red Aasna is placed on the Chowki and then the Kalash is installed. Before Kalash installation, 7 grains or seven cereals are placed under the Kalash. Gangajal, betel nut, durva, turmeric, rice grains are put in the Kalash. Mango leaves are placed in the Kalash and coconut or green coconut is placed on top of it.

The form of Goddess Buddhei is not so famous. That is why her photos or idols are not easily found anywhere. In the houses of village women, the stone on which spices are ground is called "Sheel Bate and Sheel(शीलबटा और शील)". The same Sheel Stone is cleaned thoroughly with Gangajal and idols of the Goddess are made on it with turmeric, cowrie shells, vermilion etc.

Again, the place of worship is prepared, turmeric paste, lamp, incense sticks, flowers, fruits, offerings etc. are prepared for the ritual. After that the Buddhi Baman Katha (बुद्धि बामन कथा) ritual book is recited, this path makes one spiritual and rich, it has five chapters and 134 verses that describe the fifth loka principles. It is believed that this recitation brings blessings of the goddess and the prayers of the devotees are fulfilled.

Then after the completion of the puja, the Aarti of Goddess Buddhi Baman ji is performed. After the Aarti, Prasad is distributed among the children. Then the installed Chowki of the mata is removed from the place of worship. All the items used in the worship, such as flowers, turmeric, Kalash, etc. are thrown into the water.

Then, this whole process will be done on the next Wednesday. In this way, the worship of Goddess Budhei is followed in all the Wednesdays of the month of Bhadrava. On the last Wednesday of the month, women prepare various types of vegetarian recipes, sweet dishes and then offer them to Goddess Budhei.

Some women take a Sankalp or vow in advance to observe this fast that for how many years they want to observe this fast, like 5 years, 7 years, 12 years, etc.

Then, he suggested them to worship Goddess Buddhi Baman in the month of Bhadrava and perform Buddhi Baman Vrat with devotion. After that, they came to their home and his wife started worshiping Buddhi Baman Vrat as told by the sage. After some time, she started recovering completely. Seeing this miracle, people started having faith and devotion for Buddhi Baman Vrat and people started performing this fast.
