What is Jhulan Purnima?

Jhulan Purnima(ଝୁଲଣ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା), it is celebrated by the Sanatani Vaishnav community in the month of Shravan basically come in between July-August Month. This festival is popularly celebrated which come under the monsoon season in Odisha, India when the weather is wet, humid and slightly windy.

Significance of Jhulan Purnima(झूलन पूर्णिमा)

Jhulan Purnima is basically celebrated with great pomp in Odisha, Mathura and Virndavan and Uttar Pradesh. This time, it rains a lot, but even during the rainy season, this festival is well known for decorated swings, song and dance performances.

It is a joyous festival that celebrates the romantic excitement of the rainy season in India as well as the love of the divine jodi of Radha and Krishna. Jhulan Purnima is so named because on this day Radha and Krishna are made to swing in a beautiful jhula. Jhula or swing is decorated with colorful items and flowers.

Jhulan Yatra is inspired by the Jhula Leelas of Krishna with the Gopis especially in Vrindavan. These Leelas are found in Santani Holy books like Bhagwat Purana, Harivansh Puran, and Geeta Govinda. The metaphor of the monsoon swing or the 'swing of Sawan' is used by poets and lyricists to describe the romantic feeling prevailing during the rainy season in the Indian subcontinent.
