Independence Day in India is celebrated as a public holiday on 15 August. It commemorates the country's independence from the British government on 15 August 1947. On this day the Indian Independence Act 1947 came into force, which transferred sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.

India achieved independence through non-violent resistance and civil disobedience movement run by the Indian National Congress under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Independence Day (स्वतंत्रता दिवस) in India is celebrated as a national holiday every year on 15 August.
Independence Day marks the end of British rule in 1947, brought about by the Indian Independence Act on 18 July that year, and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation after the long struggle of the Indian independence movement. You can also say that it marks the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan, which happened on the midnight of August 14-15, 1947. Since then, Pakistan celebrates Independence Day on August 14 and India celebrates its Independence Day on August 14 every year.
Behind the Scene
Some people say, that Mahatma Gandhi freed India from British Government by adopting the policy of non-violence. But if India got free only because of Gandhi's policy of non-violence, then what about the martyrs of lakhs of people out of some were hanged smilingly, whose families were killed, lakhs of people were killed by bullets? Netaji Subhash Bose's Azad Hind Army fought with all their lives and they were successful too in the end and decided he will be Prime of India, then what happened? How Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the PM instead of Netaji Subhas Bose? Hindustan had become independent even before 1947. But we were told that it was 1947 and we have been following that till today. The reality was something else and we were taught something else in history. The truth was hidden, like this too.
