About Sree Narayana Jayanti 2025

Who is Sree Narayana Guru(श्री नारायण गुरु)?

Sree Narayana Guru was born at a time when the caste system was prevalent in Kerala society. Born in the "Ezhava" caste, which was considered a lower caste, he experienced firsthand the discrimination meted out to them by the higher caste section of society. The translation of his most famous saying in Malayalam is as follows:

  • One Caste,
  • One Religion,
  • One God for All.

Story of Sree Narayana Guru

Sree Narayana Jayanti is basically a state festival of Kerala. It is celebrated on the day of “Chathyam (चथ्यम)” during the Onam season in the Chingam (चिंगम) month of the Malayalam calendar. It is the birthday of Narayana Guru; he was a saint as well as a social reformer of India. He fought against the caste system of Hinduism.

Sree Narayan Guru Jayanti is a state festival, this day is a public holiday in Kerala. It is celebrating on the 7th September each year.

Sree Narayan Guru Story

During the birth anniversary celebrations people celebrate communal harmony processions, conferences, flower offerings, community prayers, feeding the poor and community feast on the occasion of Narayana Guru Jayanti.

Narayana Guru sanctified more than 40 temples across the state in protest against allowing the so-called lower caste system in Kerala and he encouraged lower caste people to enter temples. He led a dangerous protest called the ''Vaikom Satyagraha (वाइकोम सत्याग्रह)'' against caste discrimination and untouchability, centred around the Sri Mahadeva Temple in Vaikom, which began with a high caste man preventing Narayana Guru from walking on the road leading to the famous temple.

This eventually led to the lifting of all restrictions and everyone, regardless of their caste, was given freedom to walk on the public paths leading to the temple.
