Know About Sree Narayan Guru

Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi is remembered every year in Kerala on Sunday, September 21. It is a regional public holiday according to the Kerala state government. It is celebrated because he was the spiritual leader and social reformer died on this day in 1928. Sree Narayana Guru was born on 28 August 1855. 28 August is also celebrated as a public holiday declared by the Government of Kerala.

The Story of Sree Narayan Guru

He was the catalyst and leader of the reform movement against the oppressive caste system prevailing in the society at that time. His philosophy was based on social equality, education for all and spiritual enlightenment. He was born in a family belonging to a lower caste “Ezhava” of Kerala, Sree Narayana was totally against the caste system. He received his early education in Sanskrit, literature, Upanishads and Vedas. He was highly educated at that time. He also wanted to educate the people of the region and he also started a school in his village for the local children.

Sree Narayan was a Great Meditator & Yoga Guru

After some time, he left his village to travel to Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He learned meditation and yoga from “Ayyavu Swamikal”, who was also a spiritualist and social reformer. Sree Narayana Guru then established an ashram in “Maruthavamala”, a place in Tamil Nadu, where he spent the next 8 years and was completely immersed in meditation and yoga practice. He was a very good yoga guru as well as practitioner that moment. He died in 1928 and his Samadhi still exists in Sivagiri, Varkala which is still one of the famous pilgrimage sites in Kerala, India. Thousands of followers and visitors come to visit and worship Sree Narayana Guru. There was a trust that organized and managed the Samadhi site.
