About Dola Purnima 2025

The Phalguna month full moon is called Dola Purnima, it comes a day before Holi, which is also known as Dolo Jatra, Dol Utsav or Deul, is a Hindu swing festival celebrated during the Holi festival in Braj region, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Tripura and Bengal region. The festival is dedicated to the divine couple of Radha and Krishna. It is usually celebrated on the full moon night or fifteenth day of the Phalguna month by the Gopal community.

The terms Dolo Utsav and Dola Yatra are mentioned in Hindu literature. Shri Garga Samhita, a Vaishnava text mentions this Dolotsav of Shri Krishna in the month of Chaitra. This festival continues for centuries.

The Sanskrit word dola means swing, while utsav means celebration or celebration. Hence, Dolotsav literally means swinging festival or swinging feast and it refers to the religious service of swinging a deity's idol on a swing. Similarly, the term Dola Yatra is derived from two Sanskrit words dola and yatra. Yatra means march and thus Dola Yatra means swinging and is a festival of March.
