What is Yama Deepa Daan (यम दीप दान)?

Yama Deepam, also known as Yama Deepadan, is an important Sanatan ritual observed during Diwali to ensure that no one in the house dies prematurely.

The Significance of Yama Deepa Daan

Yama Deepa Daan celebrated on Dhanteras, this day is dedicated to Lord Yama, the god of death, and aims to seek his blessings for protection against untimely death in the family. Some people make a four faced Deepam in a wheat dough ball by filling mustard oil and light such lamp to honour Lord Yama outside of the main door. This Deepam must be lit outside the main door of the house in the evening on Dhanteras. This devotional ritual involves lighting a lamp outside the house to honor Yamraj, symbolizing a prayer for longevity and protection.

Benefits of Yama Deepa Daan

  • Yama Deepam, an important festival celebrated in the ancient Indian tradition, marks the five-day Diwali celebrations, and is celebrated on the Dhan Tryodashi Tithi of the Kartik month. This Trayodashi Tithi is also known as Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi.
  • The Yama Deepam festival is primarily dedicated to appeasing Yama Deva, the god of death, and it is a time for families to pray for happiness, prosperity, and longevity.
  • Benefits of lighting a lamp at the main entrance of the house in the evening on this day removes the fear of untimely death.
  • This lamp is dedicated to Yamraj is a ritual symbol of prayer for the safety of the family and a long, healthy life.
  • It is said that if someone did sinful mistakes in the life. By lighting a lamp to Yama Deva on the day will forgive by Yama Deva.

Rituals of Yama Deepa Daan

  • There is no special puja or ritual for Yama Deepam (यम दीपम) festival on this day. This is very simple,
  • Take a bath and wear clean clothes on Trayodashi day.
  • In the evening, light a mustard oil lamp with four wicks at the main entrance of your house.
  • As per “Padma Puran”, Keep this lamp facing south, because Yama Puri is in the south direction.
  • Along with lighting the lamp, pray for the long life and healthy life of your loved ones.
  • Offer water along with diya and return home without looking back at the lamp. This mantra should be recited while offering the lamp. While chanting the mantra, one must meditate on Yam Dev.
