He was born in Teppel Jowai after the merger of Brahmaputra Valley.

U Kiang Nangbah was a Unique Freedom Fighter

U Kiang Nangbah was a unique freedom fighter from Meghalaya who led the revolt against the British government.

In the middle of the 18th century, the British government was unable to rule the hills of Meghalaya. The reason for this was U Kiang Nangwa. The Khasi and Jaintia tribes lived there independently. There were 30 small states in this area. One of these was Jaintiapur. When the British attacked here, they divided Jaintiapur into two parts like hilly and plain areas under the policy of 'divide and rule'. Along with this, they also started converting the poor forest dwellers. The ruler of the state accepted this division out of fear, but the public and the council of ministers did not accept it. They chose U Kiang Nangwa as their leader instead of the king. U Kiang formed an army of tribal heroes and fought the British advancing towards Jonoi and ultimately defeated them.
