Tamu Losar a New Year Celebration

Tamu Losar is a New Year celebration celebrated by the Gurung people. It is celebrated every 15th of the month of Pausha or December according to the English calendar. It falls in December or January according to the Nepali calendar and is celebrated as a public holiday.

Like Losar celebrated by other ethnic groups such as the Tamang and Sherpa, the Gurung divide the year into 12 cycles, known as Lohokor, with each cycle represented by a different animal. These are animals such as eagle, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, deer, rat, cow, tiger and cat.

Losar has been able to reflect the farmer's lifestyle and closeness with the seasons and nature for centuries. Dividing Losar into different parts or names, all Losar have the same basic purpose, welcoming the New Year. Today, the Tamu community is welcoming its New Year with great enthusiasm and celebration all over the world.
