About Shamba Dashmi 2025
Introduction to Shamba Dashami
Samba Dashami is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Dashami of the month of Pausha. It is a unique festival of Odisha. If we look at the English calendar, it is celebrated in the month of January. Odia people celebrate it with great reverence and devotion. Actually, it is a fast celebrated in honour of Lord Sun. This festival is especially celebrated in the eastern part of Odisha.
Know The Story of Shamba Dashami
According to Shamba Purana, one of Shri Krishna's sons was named Samba. Shamba was not a good person by nature. Neither did he respect the seniors nor obey the ladies and elders. Shri Krishna was also very sad as per his activities and behaviour.
One day, Sri Krishna was just passed there, he saw
Shamba caught one of Shri Krishna's queens and caught him embracing her. When Shri Krishna saw this, he got furious and cursed him to become "leper" in anger.
What happened, after sometime Shamba got afflicted with the disease of "leper". Then he started seeking treatment from here and there, but got no relief. Shamba started feeling very sad. When he gets sick more, people start hating him. No one was there for him either. Then day by day he started getting sicker.
One day Narad Muni came and told Shamba to worship the Sun God. After giving “Guru Diksha Updesh” to Shamba, Narad Muni told Shamba to keep the Sun God in the “Ark Kshetra”. Why is the Ark Kshetra the abode of the Sun God? that Ark Kshetra, which is called Konark. After doing continuous penance for 12 years there, Shamba today on Shukla Paksha Dashami Tithi, had darshan of the Sun God and after having darshan, he got the disease of leper and got his previous form back. But after worshipping the Sun God, Shamba had completely changed, his nature was like a pure gold.
When he remembered his previous behaviour and activities, he felt very sad. Then he lived on this earth with his family for many years and enjoyed the life of a king, at the end he attained the Vishnu Lok.
Since then, people worship the Sun God for the good health of their children and to be free from diseases and to live a long life. Today, if someone has to suffer from any such long-term illness, then that illness can be cured by seeing the Sun God and observing his fast, people still believe this.
Anyone who takes a vow to observe this fast for 12 years, it is said that his disease is definitely cured. Some people make special sweets as prasad for their children for their long life like Chhena Gaja, Chhena Poda, Rash Malai, Rasgullah, Mohan Bhog, Kheer etc. and observe a fast for Lord Surya.
On the day of Shamba Dashami, the rising sun and the setting sun are worshipped.
