About Indigenous Faith Day 2025
Introduction to Indigenous Faith Day (स्वदेशी आस्था दिवस)
The Indigenous Faith Day is celebrated every year on 1st December in Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh has a population of about ten million, spread across sixteen districts and 3,649 villages in the state. The state is home to the largest diversity of more than a hundred ethnic tribal groups and subgroups in the world, each of which speaks its own language and accent.
The Significance of Indigenous Faith Day
The day is meant to highlight and honour the great diversity of these tribes, many of whom also follow an indigenous religion. However, most of the people in the state converted to Christianity and only 29% of Hinduism is left in the state. Some of the people, mostly local Tani people, follow an indigenous religion called "Doni-Polo".
They Celebrate Doni and Polo
Doni means Sun and Polo means Moon. The day is celebrated through cultural performances such as songs, dances and prayers and feasts. Participants reiterate their commitment to protect their traditions for future generations.
