About Guru Ghasidas Jayanti 2025

Who is Guru Ghasidas?

Guru Ghasidas was born on 18 December in 1756 year in Girodpuri village of Nagpur, Maharashtra. Guru Ghasidas was the son of Mahangu Das and Mata Amrautin.

Ghasidas was famous for his preached Satnam especially for the people of the tribal area of Madhya Pradesh now it is Chhattisgarh. After the death of Guru Ghasidas, his son Guru Balakdas also carried forward his teachings ahead. Guru Ghasidas is the founder of the Satnami community in the Chhattisgarh region.

Meaning of Satnam

The word Satnam means truth and equality. They believe that all humans on this earth are equal, here no one is small or big due to the caste system. Because God has not sent us in any category.

Ghasidas was Against Caste System

During his lifetime, he faced many problems due to the caste system like Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. He did not like the caste system.

Every 18 December, government officials celebrate Guru Ghasidas Jayanti.

According to Satnami teachings, Guru Ghasidas encouraged equality as opposed to the caste system and he preached mainly to lower caste Indians. He always said that everyone is equal. Having experienced the oppression of the caste system early in his life, he was inspired to fight against it for the rest of his life.

In addition, his teachings were similar to Hinduism and Buddhism. They had so many significant differences that some may classify his movement as a new religion. His emphasis was on truth, equality, social justice and peace.

Guru Ghasidas was against Idol Worship

Guru Ghasidas also opposed the practice of "idol worship". He mostly opposed some of the rituals of Hinduism. This is because Hinduism sees physical objects as incarnations of God during Hindu worship rituals.
