About Akshaya Tritiya 2025

What is Akshya Tritiya?

“Akshya” means unending and “Tritiya” means third day of “Shuklapaksha (शुक्लपक्ष)”. This day is considered very auspicious especially for donating. It is said that on this day, due to the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, there is no shortage of foods and money from the storehouse and will get the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi with prosperity. This day is auspicious for buying gold and silver ornaments, coins, new clothes. It is very become prosperous to have a new car, new flats, or to start a new house. It is said that this day is the day of “Shukla Paksha Tritiya (शुक्ल पक्ष तृतीया)” of Maagh month, which means that Tritiya continued and lasts the whole day. Which is very true and brings prosperity in life. There is a story behind why this day is so important, let's know in details.

A Story of Akshaya Tritiya

According to a story of Akshaya Tritiya, in ancient times there was a Vaishya(small business man) named Dharam Das. One day on the way he heard some sages describing the importance of Akshaya Tritiya. The sage was saying that Akshaya Tritiya is going to give great and innumerable results who donates on the day.

Why Akshay Tritiya Day is Very Important

It was on this day that the incarnations of Nar-Narayan, Hayagriva and Parashuram appeared. In such a situation, the donations, Havan, worship etc. done on this auspicious day give eternal results, that is such results which never end. The sages also said that whatever donation, Havan, worship or tarpan is done on this day for the sake of gods and ancestors. He/she gets immense virtue. Dharam Das heard carefully, and decided to keep fasting on Akshaya Tritiya(अक्षय तृतीया) and told I became a saint to do charity.

Dharam Das lived with his family in a small village. He was very poor. He was always worried about the maintenance of his family. There were many members in his family. Dharam Das was a person of very religious nature, his good conduct and his devotion towards God and Brahmins were very famous. After hearing the importance of Akshaya Tritiya fast, he woke up early in the morning on the arrival of Akshaya Tritiya festival, took a bath in the Ganga and worshiped the Gods and Goddesses in a ritualistic manner. On the day of the fast, he filled pitchers with water, fans, barley, sattu, rice, salt, etc. as per his capacity. Wheat, jaggery, ghee, curd, some gold and clothes etc. Placed it at the feet of God and offered it to the Brahmins.

Seeing all this donation, Dharam Das's family members and his wife tried to stop him. He said that if Dharam Das donates so much, how will his family be supported. Still Dharam Das did not deviate from his charity and virtuous deeds and he gave many types of donations to the Brahmins. Whenever the holy festival of Akshaya Tritiya came in his life, Dharam Das performed worship and charity etc. on this day as per the rituals till he lived.

Despite suffering from many diseases and becoming old, still he fasted and performed religious activities and charity. After some years, he passed away. In the next birth Dharam Das became the king of “Kushavati (कुशावती)”.

It is believed that this is due to the charity and worship done on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, he became a very rich and powerful king of Kushavati in his next birth. He was such a rich and glorious king that even Tridev used to attend his “Mahayagya (महायज्ञ)” in his court on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, disguised as a Brahmin. He was never proud of his unending wealth, faith and devotion, despite being a great and glorious king, he never deviated from the path of religion. It is believed that, this same king of Kushavati was born as the famous emperor of India as Chandragupta Maurya (चन्द्रगुप्त मौर्य) in his next birth. From this story you would have come to know the importance of Akshaya Tritiya.
