First day of the Chaitra Month Celebrates Tamil New Year

Tamil New Year is the first day of the year on the Tamil calendar which is traditionally celebrated as a festival by Tamils. The date of the festival is determined as the first day of the month Chaitra along the solar cycle of the solar Hindu calendar.

According to the Gregorian calendar it falls on or around April 14 every year. The same day is celebrated as the traditional New Year in South and Southeast Asia, but it is also known by other names such as Vishu in Kerala, and Vaisakhi or Baisakhi in central and northern India.

Tamil New Year Name is Puthandu

Peter Reeves states, Tamil people celebrate Puthandu(पुथंडू), also known as Puthuvarusham(पुथुवरुशम), as the traditional "Tamil New Year". It is the month of Chittirai, the first month of the Tamil solar calendar, and Puthandu usually falls on 14 April. On this day, Tamil people greet each other with "Puttannu Vattukah(पुट्टन्नु वट्टुकाः!)" Let's say congratulations. Which is equivalent to "Happy New Year". This day is celebrated as family time. Families clean the house, prepare a tray with fruits, flowers and auspicious items, Families light the puja altar and visit their local temples.

People Wear New Clothes in New Year

People wear new clothes and children approach elders to pay their respects and seek their blessings, then the family sits down for a vegetarian feast.
