Who is Tyag Mal?
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur’s childhood name was “Tyag Mal” which comes in Amritsar, Punjab. He was born on 1 April 1621. Tyag Mal was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Singh, who is the sixth Guru of Sikh religion. His family belonged to a special community of Sikhism called the “Sodhi Clan of Khatri”. This community is very courageous and warriors. Hargobind had a daughter Bibi Viro and they had five sons named Baba Gurditta, Suraj Mal, Ani Rai, Atal Rai and Tyag Mal.
How Tyag Mal Became Tegh Bahadur
Tyag Mal later became famous as Tegh Bahadur. He fought against the Mughals in Kartarpur, which now comes in Pakistan region. Tegh Bahadur was raised in Sikh culture and was trained in archery and horse riding. He was also taught about the old scriptures like Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas to protect religion, human values, ideals and principles.
Know about Guru Tegh Bahadur
- Guru Tegh Bahadur opposed the forced conversion of non-Muslims to Islam during the rule of Aurangzeb. He was publicly executed in Delhi in 1675 on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
- The “Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib” and “Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib” in Old Delhi are the sites of his execution and cremation.
- If you look at the holy books of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, you will find one hundred and fifteen hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
- Guru Tegh Bahadur was indeed very honest and lived with truth. He is especially remembered for his selfless service to the people. He was really a courageous, honest and kind hearted for poor. He never tolerated injustice. He always raised his sword against injustice.
- He travelled all over the country with the teachings of Guru Nanak and he also written many things during the traveling period.
