About Samba Dashmi 2025

Samba Dashami(साम्ब दशमी) is a unique festival of Odisha state of India, actually it is a fast. It is celebrated on the 10th day of Shukla Paksha of Paush month or the density of the moon in Shukla Paksha of Paush month in December or January every year. This festival is especially celebrated in the eastern part of Odisha. According to Samba Purana, Sage Narad said the Samba, son of Lord Krishna, was suffering from leprosy due to the curse of Sri Krishna. Sage Narada suggested him to worship Surya in Konark, now in Odisha to get rid of this disease completely. After that, after 12 years of penance by Samba on the shore of Ocean near Konark, on this day Lord Surya appeared at that place and healed him completely. Since then, this fast is celebrated here in the form of Samba Dashami(ସାମ୍ବ ଦଶମି ). On this day people pray to the Sun for the health of their children. This worship is especially for Lord Surya Narayana. It is basically celebrated in Odisha. They worship the Sun in the morning and perform evening puja during the day. Observing this fast basically brings good health, long life and prosperity blessed by the Sun.
