Maha Vishuba Sankranti known as Pana Sankranti

Maha Vishuba Sankranti, also known as Pana Sankranti and Vishuba Sankranti, is the traditional new year of the Oriya people.

This festival is celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists in the state. Oriya people visit temples, especially Hanuman temples on this day, as it is also the birthday of Lord Hanuman. It is similar to other Hindu New Years celebrated in other states of India,like Vaisakhi in North India, Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal.

This day is also known as Mesha Sankranti this is due to the month of Mesha of the Oriya calendar. On this day the Sun changes its planetary position and enters into Aries. On this day, the Sun stay on the Vishuba Rekha of the Earth, by which day and night hours goes equal, means day will be 12hrs and night also will be the 12hrs total 24 hrs means a day. In North India this day marks the arrival of spring. Spring means the beginning of the sowing season. After this day, people start their agricultural activities all over India.
