The meaning of Kati Bihu

Kati Bihu is a regional festival of Assam. It’s basically an Assamese festival celebrated with joy and happiness. It marks the relocation of rice saplings and is known as “Kongali Bihu”.

Bihu is mostly three days festivals and Kati Bihu is one day of them. These three days festivals are totally linked with traditional agricultural festival. During Kati Bihu, people light earthen lamps and candles to celebrate, with a special focus on lighting a ghee lamp or “Deepak” near the Tulsi plant. On the day.

What People do in Kati Bihu Festival?

On the day, people are basically,

  • Waking up early,
  • Cleaning the house,
  • Offering water to the Tulsi plant. and
  • Lighting up the ghee lamps called "Akash Banti" in paddy fields.

The Significance of Kati Bihu

Kati Bihu is celebrated on the Sankranti of the Assamese months of “Ahin and Kati” it is come in last month of September. At this time the paddy in the barn is almost exhausted and there is plenty of time to harvest the paddy. During the Bihu festival, Assamese people plant basil seedlings in their houses and lighting up the candles or ghee lamp at the roots of Tulsi in the evening. They also do the courtyards with many lamp and candles like Diwali and welcome to Goddess Lakshmi. The main lamp is placed in the courtyard where the Tulsi plant is present. The Tulsi plant is cleaned for the festival and is kept on an earthen platform called "Tulsi Bheti." People make offerings and pray to Goddess Tulsi for the wellbeing of their family and to have a good harvest.

This ritual is continued for the entire month of Kati. People also light up a special lamp called "Akash Banti" means Sky candle in their paddy fields. These lamps are fuelled with mustard oil and are kept high on the tip of bamboo poles. People believe that, these lighted lamps will guide in the name of their ancestors towards in the heaven.

Another belief is that, the lighting of these lamps is to attract the insects, flies and kill them in fire to protect their crops.
