Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti or Shivaji Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire, celebrated throughout Maharashtra and a public holiday. According to the Gregorian calendar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti (छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज जयंती) also known as Shiv Jayanti is celebrated every year on 19 February, while as per the Hindu date. The date varies every year.

About Chhatrapati Shivaji

Shivaji Maharaj's name was Shivaji Bhosale and he was a member of the Bhonsale Maratha dynasty. He was born in 1630 at Shivneri Fort on the Marathi Shalivahana according to Krishna Paksha 3 of the Hindu calendar Phalguna.He is considered one of the greatest Maratha rulers, carving out a territory from the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur, which marked the beginning of the Maratha Empire. Celebrating this festival first started with Maratha ruler Mahatma Phule in Pune in 1870. Bal Gangadhar Tilak took these celebrations forward.
