What is Chhath Puja?

Chhath festival, it means Chhath or Shasthi puja which is the worship of Surya Narayan, it is a Hindu regional festival celebrated on Shasthi of Kartik Shukla Paksha.

Where Chhath Puja Celebrates?

This unique folk festival of Sun worship is mainly celebrated in the Terai areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal. It is said that, this festival is the biggest festival of Maithili, Magahi and Bhojpuri people.

The Significance Chhath Puja

This is their culture. Chhath festival is celebrated with great splendour in Bihar. Before Chhath Puja celebrates in Bihar, UP. But now it celebrates in all over India and abroad also. This festival shows a small glimpse of the Vedic Aryan culture of Bihar. The festival goes on for four days which is celebrated according to the process of worship of the Sun and Usha worship already described in Rigveda and Aryan tradition.

Who Celebrates Chhath Puja?

This festival, which is celebrated by Hindus in Bihar and neighbouring states, is also seen celebrated by followers of other religions including Islam. Gradually, this festival has become popular among the diaspora as well as all over the world.

The Story of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is dedicated to the God Sun, Nature, Water, Air and her sister “Chhathi Maiya” to thank the deities for restoring life on earth, Chhathi Maiya, also known as “Ranbe Maiya” in Mithila, “Sabita Maiya” in Bhojpuri and “Ranbe Thakur” in Bengali.

Chhathi Maiya, the sixth form of Parvati, sister of Lord Surya, is worshiped as the goddess of the festival. Chhath is celebrated six days after Kali Puja on the sixth lunar day. During Chhath in Mithila, Maithil women wear pure cotton dhoti without stitching to depict the pure traditional culture of Mithila.

The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are celebrated over a period of four days. These include holy bath, fasting and abstinence from drinking water, standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad called Arpan, Arghya. The main worshipers called Parvatin are usually women.

However, a large number of men also observe this festival as Chhath is not a gender-specific festival. Everyone, men, women, old and young, observe the fast of Chhath festival. Some devotees also perform a procession march as they head for the river banks. Environmentalists claim that Chhath is the most eco-friendly Hindu festival. This festival is celebrated by Nepali and Indian people along with their diaspora.
