Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Ujjain

The Story of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlingam(महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग)

There was a beautiful city named “Avanti (अवंती नगरी)”, which was very dear to Lord Shiva. There lived a knowledgeable Brahmin in this city, who was a very intelligent and ritualistic as a brahmin. Also, Brahmins were great devotees of Lord Shiva. The most important thing is that he used to make a mortal Shivalinga and worship it every day. Do you know what is the name of Brahmin? His name was “Vedapriya”, his name was like that and his deeds were also like that. He was really very fond of four Vedas, he was very adept in Karma Kanda, he was always busy in acquiring the knowledge of Vedas. The Brahmin had received the full fruits of his good deeds.

Where a demon named “Dushan” lived on Ratnamal Mountain (रत्नमल पर्वत). The demon had received a boon from Lord Brahma. So, with the help of this boon he used to attack religious people. Then one day he decided to attack the Brahmins of Ujjain. For this reason, he started troubling the brahmins of Avanti Nagari with his actions.

The demon wanted that no brahmin should perform the rituals. Started forbidding brahmins from performing rituals. Asked to stop the religious activities, but the brahmins did not pay attention to his words. However, he started being harassed by demons every day. They fed-up with this, the brahmins started praying Lord Shiva for their protection. On the request of brahmins, Lord Shiva warned the demon before stopping the atrocities of the demon. One day demons attacked. Lord Shiva appeared in the form of “Mahakaal” by tearing the earth. Angered Shiva destroyed the demon “Dushan” with just one roar. Overwhelmed by the demand of the devotees to stay there, the Lord Shiva sat there. For this reason, the name of this place came to be known as Mahakaleshwar. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga (महाकालेश्वर) which is the 3rd Jyotirlinga out of 12 Jyotirlingas.

Mahakaleshwar and Samrat Vikramaditya

According to mythology, this temple is 900 to 1000 years old, which was built by Ujjain’s king Chakravarti Samrat Vikramaditya. In every story of Ujjain, you will definitely find the name of King Vikramaditya, because he was the one king who ruled Ujjain for more than 100 years. Had ruled for years, the special thing about this temple is that the one who comes here from the heart, believes in Shiva passionately and any sorrowful person’s water touches the Mahakaal Shivalinga. He does not even need to tell his problems. His troubles themselves float away like a paper boat in the flow of a river. I believe in saying that if you are struggling with any problem or any situation is bad then go to the shelter of Lord Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain is the only solution to your problems. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: The only South-facing Lingam.
